España 16-18

27.10.2018

2016 - The organisation of the holiday was very complicated due to the health problems of my grandma, so I was not so ready to leave. Furthermore, two days before to leave to Munich (first stop of the trip), the city was shocked by near the Olympia Park, therefore there was a lot of anxiety and concern, especially in my family. Despite that, I left and the second stop was excepted to be in Fuerteventura island, in the Canarias, then basically in Africa, but still in the Spanish land. The idea to go there was born on Skyscanner, because watching the flights, I noticed that were very cheap so I thought, why not? I knew that Fuerteventura was an island fit for couple but, as usual I did not care, I decided that was worth to be there few days before to stay the last days of the trip in Portugal. Like always, I did not read anything about the island, I just booked the hostel in Corralejo, in the north side of the island.
Landed in the Canarias, I understood immediately why the island was named like that, the wind was so strong and the landing was not that simple, luckily I was not in a Volotea that seems more a coach bus with wings rather than an airplane, but I was in a Tui Fly, german trust.

The arrival in Corralejo has been a little chaotic, the bus brought me almost in front of the office I should have taken the hostel keys - but the office was closed, so after some calls, I decided to go directly to the hostel. After having rang, I found out that the keys were already in the hostel, that actually was a beautiful house with a wonderful garden. First thing noticed was the massive presence of Italians in Corralejo. In the hostel there were two italian people that actually lived in there while they were trying or struggling to create business or to open restaurants (one for sure wanted to open a new pizzeria in town, the other honestly seemed a clown) in addition there was a girl from Bergamo who propose me to rent a car in order to visit the island.
Honestly, I would have slapped her. She was annoying me, talked too much and randomly - I really used my huge patience to handle her and despite everything, the trip was OK.
The beauty of Fuerteventura is in the variety of colors (thanks to its vulcanic nature); landscapes changing suddenly, starting from the small Corralejo, passing through the sandy dunes, going through the black rocks in the center of the island ending to the beaches in Costa Calma.
The walk on the dunes was unreal. I have never been to the real desert, so watching these huges sandy sweeps and having the chance to walk them on was exciting, furthermore these places are perfect for pictures and I took advantage of this as much as I could.

In my opinion this island is perfect for motocyclist too, the routes starting from east side, the most populate with Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario, to the west side, go through mountains and curvy streets, really perfect for those who wants to have fun with motorbikes.
In the days I rent the car, I passed from the sea level to 670 meters high in the Mirador de Morro Velosa in the natural Park in Betancuria, where is clearly possible to see the sea. The whole area of the Park in Betancuria must be visited and enjoyed, the orange rocks and the poor vegetation around are the main details that can be noticed and the positive aspect of the zone is that, even if I was there at the end of July, the tourism is not that crazy, so it's chaotic and we can drive around the island without too much traffic (not like in Malta or Santorini where it's much much much worse).
The black beach in Ajuy with the cave few steps closer, seemed like the end of the landscape trasformation, started from the white sand of the beaches in Corralejo and Costa Calma to the black small rocks in Ajuy.
Costa Calma, Morro Jable and the rest of the south-east of the island is perfect for  relaxing and beach life: amazing beach, horrible hotels for tourists and resort for those who do not want to do anything. I watched the Windsurf World Championship but I did not understand that much, there were so many surfers that came in and out from the sea and the speakers did not say almost anything, for sure was unbelievable how they stand over the board despite that wind.
Last stop was in El Cotillo beach, in the North-West side, one of the most famous in the island, probably with one-two days more I could have time to relax but Portugal was coming and anyway Fuerteventura is a place where I come back with pleasure. Unbelievable who the island seemed splitted in three, the Italian northern part, the English central and the German southern. It was so evident that I guess that Spanish people are less than the "immigrants", in fact I think to have spoken almost only in Italian for the whole time.

2017 - Barcelona - Basque Country - Madrid: Barcelona to meet a friend, Basque Country because I wanted to go there for long time and Madrid because is simply Madrid.
I spent three days in Barcelona, just to refresh my memory (it was for three years I did not go there) - it's a city where, repeating it, I could live without any problem - also if actually the tourism is massive, and even it's a resource, that risks to give to the city a worse impression rather than it is.
The tour in the Basque Country will have three nights in Bilbao and five in San Sebastiàn, but trying to visit more places as possible in the whole region.
Flight Norwegian (maybe the best low-cost company) Barcelona-Bilbao - a considerable change of climate, from the hot one in Barcellona to the foggy rain in Bilbao. The north of Spain is for sure much different than the rest of country I have visited so far: so green, fresh and wet. Bilbao is very interesting city, well-finished, really alive and with a lot of culture (Guggenheim museum is the main cornerstone). I thought to see many Basque flags and some secessionist writings, instead nothing of that, I have seen them only in Pamplona (that is in Navarra though).
Bilbao is not that big, therefore I take the chance to visit some places around and I decided for Plentzia-Gorliz, Sopelana and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.
Plentzia-Gorliz were the last metro stop, I did not know exactly what there was there, I just saw from the map that they were on coast, so I made an attempt. Plentzia is a very small town with beautiful landscapes, a nice beach and a small port where the river (named Plentziako Itsasadarra) flows into the ocean. Coming back from Plentzia I stopped in Sopelana, where I read there were beautiful beaches and actually it was true. La playa de Arriatera was gorgeous, a beach hidden by the cliffs with the ocean waves perfect for those who can surf.

The other town visited during my stay in Bilbao was San Juan Gatzelugatxe. After having hopped off from the bus, the signs brought to a quite dangerous and steep descent where San Juan was 1,5 km far. At the half of the descent, I started to glimpse what was exactly San Juan, there was a mirador on the left side where it was possible to stop for few pictures: it's basically an island connected to the main ground by neverending stairway that ends on the top where there is church. No question that it's the most amazing place visited in the journey, I was so surprised because I did not know anything about this island and the view that I could see either from the island and from the main land is speechless. This island has been used, like other places around, in "The Game of Thrones" series (I found out that just arriving there) and I can understand why. The stairway to the top was long (240 steps) and the hot temperature of that day was not helping me, but when I reaching the top, I got that was absolutely worth it, a place to see definitely in a place of the world not properly touristic but with a wonderful landscape. The view from the top is unbelievable, the snake of the stairs on one side, the basque coast on an another and the Gulf on the opposite side. The way back to the bus stop was so tough, I was completely sweated, luckily I had a towel in my bag otherwise I would have come back to Bilbao in horrible conditions. Back in Bilbao, I took a metro to Portugalete to see a famous bridge that recommended me and finally I have been to the Artxanda Mount to view the city from the top, a lovely panorama where I remember how I was noticing the difference between the green North of Spain and the dry and yellow Central-South part, a strong contrast that tones down already going from San Sebastiàn too Pamplona.

San Sebastiàn/Donostia is the chosen city to stay on the seaside and chill or almost doing nothing. Actually that did not happen, because I spent part of those five days to visit some places around too like I did in Bilbao. San Sebastiàn is really beautiful, a city next to the ocean with beaches ( especially the Kontxa or Concha in Spanish),  nice bars and a lot of glimpses and views like the top in San Telmo or the Mount Igueldo where there is a small amusement park, and it's probably the most touristic city of the region but very sustenaible. It was not so easy to have a bath because of the wind and the waves of the ocean, in fact I think to have touch lightly the sea during those days. The places visited near San Sebastiàn were Zumaia, Biarritz in France, and Pamplona in Navarra.
The time spent San Sebastiàn till the penultimate night has been amazing thanks to the hostel mates, who left basically all together to different destinations, and of course they came from different part of the world.
In those days I ate kg and kg of pintxos, slices of bread with any kind of food you can imagine over, and are very similar to the venician cicchetto, therefore more or less, I felt to be a little bit at home.
Zumaia is an another small town where they recorded the Game of Thrones series and its cliffs and its uncontaminated beaches are perfect like it was San Juan. Walking around the small streets of the town, I found some small signs that seem to indicate a specific place to reach; where I notice that I was going too far away, I checked better what those signs mean: they were showing the direction of the Camino di Santiago, so I made two km of the Camino, meeting a lot of people with walking stick and bags and lot of hustle, but it must be an unbelievable, tough and spiritual experience, mostly from the personal point of view rather than the religious one. Maybe one day I will do it too, never say never.

Zumaia
Zumaia

Biarritz is a town few km far from the Spanish border, in the French part of the Basque Country. It's a very nice town, feeling that fits particularly for quite rich people, since the hotels and the prices were quite high along the coast. The plan was to go to Bayonne too, but no time was remained so I stayed on the coast to enjoy the sun.
The last city before to leave San Sebastiàn was Pamplona, in the region Navarra. The journey (an hour and half by bus) shows the most evident transformation of the landscape from the basque vegetazion to the Spanish classic arid sweeps. Pamplona seems to be an isolated city, I remember that around itself there were only dry hills and few wind turbines. The city center is really typical, high and coloured palaces with black railing in a series of tiny streets where in July, during las Fiestas de San Fermìn, a lot of crazy bulls run. Even out of the historical center, the city is nice, there are so many parks and la Citadela is a beautiful place for relaxing or spending good times. After having left Pamplona, I spent the last night in San Sebastiàn before to take the train the following early morning to reach Madrid - Atocha.

The return in Madrid has been amazing, like the other times. There is a strong emotional connection that will remain forever with this city. I wandered for one-two days around Cibeles, Sol, Chueca, Malasaña and the ease to orient there immediately can describe how this city impressed me that much. For sure there are locations and places more attractive that Madrid, but when we talk about personal feelings, it starts to be subjective. Here I started a journey that I'm trying to pursue, learning day by day and loving the culture of traveling in all its perspectives. I took advantage of my return in Madrid to visit Toledo and Segovia, since I wanted to go there since long time. Those are two historical towns that deserve to be visited absolutely, especially Segovia is so beautiful and furthermore, for those who love the ancient history, visit it will be amazing. There's a Roman aqueduct that is more than 2000 years old, an Alcazar build around the V-VI century, and there are some Arabic references visible around the town. Those are two small towns, so can be visited in one day without any problem. I still don't know when I will be back to Madrid - maybe in 2019 or 2020, the priorities are different and nothing is plannable at the moment, but if there's a chance, I'll take it for sure.
2018 - Barcelona, Bachelor Party - I don't think there is much more to say.
2019 - Still do not know, I go to Spain once a year since 2012 - I don't have a plan, there are still places I would like to see (Galicia, Cantabria for example), but it's still all to plan and I still do not know when and how I will be there, still everything to decide and plan.
