Suggestione partita da Instagram qualche tempo prima, visitare la Finlandia.
L'obiettivo era vederla in un clima vicino a quello invernale per poter vedere i colori che tanto mi avevano incuriosito a casa, così sono partito il 1 Aprile (2017 come dice il titolo).
L'itinerario è stato intenso, purtroppo in una settimana non c'era il tempo di vedere tutto quello che avrei voluto, così ho cercato di organizzarmi in base ai mezzi e alle possibilità che avevo.
Alla fine ho deciso per Helsinki-Tallinn (Estonia)-Turku (dormendo sempre a Helsinki), poi a nord fino a Rovaniemi in Lapponia, infine rientro a Helsinki con tappa a Porvoo. Ho dovuto rinunciare a Tampere e alla parte centrale tra Lahti e Kuusamo ma non significa che in futuro non ci vada, anzi..
Ero emozionato, più di altre volte, sapevo che sarebbe stata una vacanza diversa - più focalizzata sui paesaggi e sulla natura, ma era quello che volevo - ero davvero impaziente di arrivare a Helsinki.
L'impatto è stato, come immaginavo, freddo dal punto di vista climatico - sono passato in poche ore (Volo Venezia-Monaco-Helsinki) dai 20°C ai 3-4°C e pioveva tantissimo, quindi l'arrivo in ostello è stato più scomodo del solito. La sensazione è strana, devo ancora rendermi conto di essere nel Nord Europa, cammino per la città e vedo alberi innevati, fiumi praticamente ghiacciati, un vento freddo che mi accompagna tra le enormi strade della città ma che non mi penetra perché ero coperto dalla testa ai piedi come se fossi dovuto partire per l'Alaska.
Helsinki è la terza città della Scandinavia che vedo dopo Stoccolma e Copenhagen, ad essere sincero è la meno bella delle tre, è vero che il paragone con due eccellenze del genere è un po' ingeneroso, però la capitale finlandese non è allo stesso livello e mi è sembrato lampante.
Però di Helsinki ho adorato le sue aree naturali fuori dal centro, specialmente l'isola di Seurasaari - un'isola con alcune case tipiche immerse nel verde degli alberi più comuni in Finlandia molto alti con un tronco fino di colore grigio-marrone. Il lago ghiacciato e la foschia hanno reso magico il paesaggio, ho fatto qualche timido passo sul lago ma, non essendo certo che i miei 90 kg fossero sopportati, ho preferito sedermi su uno scoglio e godermi la vista - ero lì per quello e ci sono arrivato, avevo praticamente già raggiunto quello che speravo di vedere, quindi tutto ciò che mi sarebbe aspettato successivamente era un regalo dalla natura.
Suggestion started in Instagram some time before, visiting Finland.
The goal was to visit it in a moment very close to winter in order to see the colours that made me so curious at home, so I left the 1st of April (2017 as the title says).
The itinerary was intense, unfortunately in a week there was no time to visit everything I wanted, therefore I tried to organize myself according the transport and the chance I had.
Then I decided for Helsinki-Tallinn (Estonia)-Turku (still staying in Helsinki), then up to Rovaniemi in Lapland and at the end return to Helsinki with a stop in Porvoo. I had to turn down to Tampere and to the central part of the country between Lahti and Kuusamo but this does not mean that in future I will not go there, actually..
I was excited, more than other times, I knew that this would have been a different holiday - more focused on landscapes and nature, but it was what I looked for - I could not wait to arrive in Helsinki.
The impact was, as expected, cold in climate terms - I moved in few hours (Flight Venice-Munich-Helsinki) from 20°C to 3-4°C and was raining so much, then the arrive in the hostel was more uncomfortable than usual. The sensation was weird, I still had to realize to be in North Europe, I walk around the city and I can see snowy trees, river basically iced, a cold wind that brings me between the huge roads of the city but did not penetrate me since I was completely covered from the head to the feet like I should have gone to Alaska.
Helsinki is the third Scandinavian city I visit after Stockholm and Copenhagen, to be honest it's less beautiful than the other two, is also true that the comparison with two excellence is a bit unfair, but the finnish capital is not at the same level and seems so visible to me.
In the other hand, in Helsinki I loved its natural areas outside of the center, especially Seurasaari island - an island with few typical house absorbed into the nature with these common kind of high trees with a thin grey-brown trunk that dominate the area. The iced lake and the haze made the view so magic, I attempted few shy steps on the lake but, not being sure about the ice was supporting my 90 kg, I preferred to sit on a rock and enjoy the view - I was there for this and I got it, I had already reached my aim about what I hoped to see, therefore the rest I still have to visit in the following days, was a gift by the nature.
Seurasaari
L'isola di Suomenlinna è la fortezza del '700 patrimonio dell'UNESCO ed è l'isola più visitata e famosa di Helsinki. L'ho visitata in una nebbia fitta che sembrava ricordare Silent Hill, quindi non mi ha impressionato troppo apparte qualche scorcio ma credo sia stata fondamentalmente colpa del meteo.
Sono rimasto molto suggestionata dai laghi ghiacciati o dalla riva del porto con questi blocchi di ghiaccio dove qualche pescatore cercava di raccogliere qualcosa. Il mercato vicino al porto mi ha regalato un'altra gioia tanto attesa, le aringhe - in questo caso fritte, come al Nystekt Strömming di Stoccolma dove mi sono mangiato non so quanti kg di pane con le aringhe, troppo buone. Le aringhe crude, come quelle servite in giro per Amsterdam, le ho provate in un ristorante insieme al salmone e altri pesci vari. Le aringhe crude hanno un sapore forte, molto forte, quindi consiglio una o due chewing gum dopo averle mangiate, però le adoro.
A 2 ore e mezza di treno verso ovest, si trova Turku, sostanzialmente il paese principale di un enorme arcipelago di isole dove alcune sono collegate tra loro da ponti. Probabilmente per visitare tutto l'arcipelago ci vogliono giorni e giorni perché è davvero immenso, io dal centro ho preso il bus verso Kakskerta una località nel nulla, solo natura e paesaggi meravigliosi. Ero praticamente da solo, non ho visto macchine passare per un po' di tempo, solo un autobus ogni mezz'ora che prelevava quelle poche persone che vivevano lì - queste isole sono contraddistinte da case (enormi case) con vista sul mare dove durante l'estate (seppur breve) non fanno fatica a farsi un bagno. Avevo letto della possibilità di noleggiare una bici e mi ero informato ma era un po' fuori-budget (parecchio) così ho sfruttato le mie gambe e i bus locali - però consiglio fortemente un giro lì a Turku.
Suomenlinna island is the fortress of '700 UNESCO heritage site and it is the most famous and visited island in Helsinki. I visited it in a thick fog that remembered so much Silent Hill, so it did not impress me a lot except few parts but I suppose was caused the bad weather. I was instead so impressed by the iced lakes and the shore of the port with these huge blocks of ice where some fishers were struggling to get something good. The market close the port gave to me an another pleasure so long-awaited, the herrings - this time fried, like at Nystekt Strömming in Stockholm where I ate I don't know how many kg of bread with herrings, so yummy.
The raw herrings, like the ones served in Amsterdam, were tried in a restaurant together with salmon and other fishes. The raw herrings have a strong taste, very strong so I suggest one or a couple of chewing gums afterwards, but I love them. Two hours and half far westward, there is Turku, basically the mean town of a huge arcipelago of islands where some of them are connected by bridges. Probably to visit the whole arcipelago are required days and days because it is so huge, I took a bus from the center towards Kakskerta a place in the middle of nowhere, just nature and beautiful landscape. I was alone, I did not see cars passing by for long time, just a bus every half an hour that picked up just the few habitants - these islands are characterised by houses (big houses) with a stunning view on the sea where during the summertime (even short) it is not that hard to take a bath. I read about the chance to rent a bike too but I could not afford it unfortunately so I used just my legs and the local buses - but I strongly recommend a visit in Turku.

Da Helsinki ho preso la nave e attraverso il golfo Finlandese sono arrivato a Tallinn, in Estonia - ovviamente è la prima volta che vado nei paesi baltici (Spero un giorno di poter passare anche Lettonia e Lituania). Tallinn è stupenda, un cittadina davvero piccola ma veramente bellissima, con enormi richiami russi (l'indipendenza è avvenuta solo nel 1918) dove si può passeggiare tra piazze e strade coloratissime. E' una cittadina piena di dettagli da trovare e da scoprire, ricordo benissimo la pasticceria nascosta dietro un vicolo con al suo interno un arredamento dell'800 dove ho fatto la "seconda colazione". Tallinn viene sfruttata dai finlandesi per fare la spesa, visto che costa decisamente meno ed è divisa solo da 2 ore di nave da Helsinki. Ricordo infatti come le stesse persone che vedevo all'andata, le vedevo cariche di sacchetti della spesa al ritorno.
Tallinn quindi è assolutamente da vedere e certamente mi ha reso ancor più curioso sui paesi baltici, luoghi che spero di vedere in futuro.I took the ship from Helsinki and through the finnish Gulf I arrived in Tallinn, in Estonia - it was my first time of course in the Baltic Countries (I wish I could visit Latvia and Lithuania too one day). Tallinn is so beautiful, a very tiny town but so cute, with evident Russian references (the Indipendency has been reached just in 1918) where it is possible to walk through colorful streets and nice squares. It's a town so full of details to find out and to discover, I remember so well a pastry shop behind a street with inside furnitures from the 19th century where I had a "second breakfast". Tallinn is used from Finnish people to do grocery shopping, since it's much cheaper and it's just two hours far from Helsinki (by ship). In fact I remember how the same people I saw leaving Helsinki, were returning with so many bags.
Therefore, Tallinn must be visited and it definitely makes me more curious about the Baltic Countries, places I hope to see in future.
Tallinn
Prossima tappa a Rovaniemi, in Lapponia - 3 giorni a nord all'inizio del Circolo Polare Artico, non vedevo l'ora di essere lì. L'arrivo all'aeroporto di Rovaniemi è stato speciale, immerso nella natura con alberi innevati e panorama completamente bianco. La cittadina di Rovaniemi è molto piccola e fondamentalmente non c'è molto al suo interno, è soprattutto quello che c'è attorno che è speciale: un fiume ghiacciato, le motoslitte che ci passano sopra, le persone che si siedono sopra il fiume a pescare e il paesaggio naturale che domina la scena - un luogo così mi mancava nella lista ed ero così felice di essere lì.
Il piano era di fare il safari con le renne e di fare ice karting, purtroppo la seconda attività non è stato possibile perchè c'era troppa acqua sulla pista e purtroppo non c'era il tempo per cambiare attività. L'attività con le renne però è stata fatta, ci hanno portato via bus nel bosco a svariati km dove c'era una coppia di persone che le allevava. Sono animali stupendi, non troppo amichevoli in realtà, però perlomeno si faceva accarezzare. Il safari consisteva nell'effettuare un percorso sulle slitte dove si passava nel bosco e ho potuto vedere di sfuggita un paio di volpi, un paesaggio innevato difficile da dimenticare. La temperatura era ovviamente sotto lo zero, sui -5 circa, però essendo abbastanza secco quindi davvero sopportabile seppur coperto da sciarpa, cappello, giubbotto lungo, guanti e timberland ai piedi.
La mattina prima di effettuare il safari sono andato al Santa Claus Village, all'ingresso del Circolo Polare Artico. Il luogo è molto curioso, si può dire che è speciale, perchè nonostante sia più adatto per i bambini, ti lascia una sensazione particolare - specialmente l'incontro con Babbo Natale dove è stato come tornare indietro di 20 anni quando credevo che esistesse davvero, quindi posso immaginare cosa può provare un bambino a vederlo e a poterci parlare. Dietro il villaggio c'erano gruppi meravigliosi di renne e di husky con il quale si poteva effettuare un piccolo safari attorno al villaggio.
Nei tre giorni passati in Lapponia, ho certamente capito che ci devo tornare - soprattutto per vedere l'aurora boreale, che mi è sfuggita per un centinaio di km, quindi devo per forza ritornare a Nord per potermela godere e ho capito che forse un giorno/due in più ci stavano tutti.
Gli ultimi giorni in Finlandia li ho passati tra Helsinki e Porvoo, una cittadina lì vicino molto carina dove mi hanno suggerito di fare una visita.
Una cosa è certa, è valsa la pena di venire in Finlandia assolutamente - volevo proprio vedere e fare un tipo di viaggio leggermente diverso dal solito e spero di poterne fare uno simile in futuro.
Next stop in Rovaniemi, in Lapland - 3 days to the North at the beginning of the Arctic Circle, I could not wait to be there. The arrival in the Rovaniemi airport has been special, sinked in the nature with snowy trees and view completed white. The town is very small and basically there is not so much in there, but it's mostly what there's around that is amazing: an iced river, snowmobiles riding over, people sitted over the river for fishing and the nature which dominates the scene - I missed in my list a place like this and I was so happy to be there.
The plan was to make a safari with the reindeers and a ice karting race, but unfortunately the second activity mentioned was not possible due to the quantity of water on the track and I had not time to change the plan. However, the safari with reindeers has been done, they brought us in the wood several km far where a couple of people breeded them. They are stunning, not really friendly but at least I could touch them. The safari consisted of doing a route on the sleighs where we went through the wood and I was able to see quickly a pair of foxes, a snowy landscape really hard to forget. The temperature was (of course) below 0°C, around -5°C, but since it was quite dry, it was not so hard to go through despite I was covered by scarf, hat, gloves, coat and timberland on my feet.
The morning before the safari, I went to the Santa Claus Village, at the entry of the Arctic Circle. It was very curious, I would say special, because even if it's particurarly appropriate for children, it left to me a particular sensation - especially the meeting with Santa Claus where it was like coming back of 20 years when I truly believed in him, so I can imagine what can feel a child in meeting him and talking with him. Behind the village there were stunning groups of reindeers and huskies where was possible to do a small safari around the village.
In these three days spent in Lapland, I definitely understood that I must come back - especially to see the aurora borealis, because I missed it for a hundred of km, so I must return in the North to enjoy it and I understood that I could stay maybe one or two days more.
I have spent the last days in Finland between Helsinki and Porvoo, a cute small town where some people suggested me to do a short visit.
One thing is sure, it was absolutely worth to come in Finland - I really wanted to see and make a kind of travel a little bit different than the usual and I hope I can make others similar in future.
